CEO Andrew Fergholz introduced three subject matter experts brought together for the discussion:
• Matthew Versaggi, Presidential Innovation Fellow in A.I.
• Dennis Keane, CIO, Red Wing Shoes
• Stacia Nelson, Founder and CEO, Pivot Strategies
In this recorded discussion, our expert partners delivered a call to action plus next steps for businesses to develop a clear AI strategy and execute it effectively.
The first step according to Matthew Vesraggi: “Mature the organization, get it AI-ready, and then operationalize that.” Leaders should understand the current capabilities and gaps within their business. With that information they can then create a roadmap that focuses on both technology and business strategy, organizational culture, and change management.
For large-size businesses like Red Wing Shoes, CIO Dennis Keane recommended focusing on strategic alignment, governance, and the business-first approach. By starting with business problems and working towards technology solutions, companies can ensure that AI initiatives are practical and deliver tangible results.
Founder and CEO of Pivot Strategies Stacia Nelson also pointed out the importance of communication and culture. She stressed the need for transparency and early engagement, especially in fostering a positive environment where employees—both early and late adopters—feel comfortable with AI technologies.
While AI presents immense opportunities, it also raises concerns, particularly regarding job displacement. Employees may fear that AI will replace them or render their roles obsolete. However, as Nelson noted, AI should be viewed as a complement, not a substitute, saying “It’s a tool for humans—not a replacement.” By focusing on the repetitive and mundane aspects of jobs, AI can free employees to combat burnout by focusing on more creative and rewarding tasks.
Keane also highlighted that businesses should look for "low-hanging fruit"—simple, yet effective AI applications like automation and process streamlining. By starting small and achieving quick wins, organizations build momentum and gain confidence to iterate and scale the process and tech with more complex projects.
A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the critical role of governance in AI implementation. Both Versaggi and Keane discussed how AI governance frameworks are essential to avoid risks like data misuse, privacy violations, and unintentional bias. Creating a governance structure ensures that AI applications are aligned with business strategy and adhere to ethical standards, while a layered approach ensures transparency and accountability across the organization.
Keane shared Red Wing’s approach, which includes three levels of governance:
As AI technologies evolve, their potential to reshape industries is undeniable. From improving business processes to creating new market opportunities, AI is poised to redefine virtually every standard. But as Versaggi cautioned, AI is still maturing. Organizations need to be adaptable, patient and resilient while these applications scale and evolve.
One of the most exciting developments discussed was the convergence of AI with other technologies like IoT and quantum computing.
The future of AI lies in creating hybrid systems that combine AI with other advanced technologies to solve complex business challenges.
